Understanding the Grading System and Grade Point Scale

Who is this for?  All learners tracking their academic progress.

Understanding how grading works helps you track your progress, set goals, and make sense of your overall performance. A grade is the score you earn from assessments such as mid-semester and end-of-semester assessments, lab assessments, Continuous Assessments, and examinations.

How your course grade is made up

All assessments together contribute 40% of your final course grade, and the final examination contributes 60%. For multiple-choice (MCQ) assessments, you may attempt each up to twice: if you complete both attempts your recorded score is the average of the two, and if you complete only one, that score is recorded. You can view the grading pattern and requirements in each course's instructions on the LMS.

Grade bands and grade points

Each letter grade maps to a mark range and a grade point on a five-point scale:

How GPA is calculated

Multiply the grade point earned in each course by that course's credit units to get its quality points. Add up the quality points, then divide by the total credit units registered for the semester.

GPA = Total Quality Points divided by Total Credit Units

Where to view your GPA

Once results are approved and published, log in to the Student Portal, open the Results section, and you will see your cumulative GPA (CGPA) alongside your most recent semester's GPA. From the SIS you can also view, download where available, and request your official transcript.

Note  The Learner Success Team cannot explain, review, or change grades awarded by faculty. If you have a concern about a specific grade, use the Grade Appeal process.
